O. Henry (William Sydney Porter) was a short-story writer. The collection contains two letters from Henry to North Carolina friends while he was living on a ranch in La Salle County, Tex., enclosing six pencil drawings of humorous incidents he had observed, with comments.

O. Henry was born as William Sydney Porter on September 11, 1862 in Greensboro, NC. He worked as a pharmacist in Greensboro and moved to Texas for his health in 1882 where he became a ranch hand. Porter relocated to Austin, TX and worked as a pharmacists, served as draftsman at the Texas General Land Office, a teller at First National Bank of Austin, and started a humorous weekly magazine, The Rolling Stone.
